Gatestone Institute : This #war has to be fought in numerous battlefields and against many #enemies that, though united in their efforts to #destroy #democratic #societies, first among them the US, use a bewilderingly wide range of weapons and tactics.

The George W. Bush administration opened the #military theater of this war by “liberating” #Afghanistan and #Iraq and seeking to #destroy the #terrorists nested there.

But this is a war that must also be fought in #diplomatic, #cultural, #religious, and, above all, #political #battlefields. In all those theaters the #US needed, and could have found, #allies, including among a majority of the #Muslims who have been the first #victims of terror. The #commission made no suggestions about how to engage in those battlefields, who to choose as allies and whom to identify as #neutrals or foes.

Now, this enemy does not grow on trees. He is a #citizen of a state, has bases and safe havens not in space, but in real countries, and uses all the facilities of the #modern #global system. It was astonishing that the 9/11 Commission chose to fly over all that. It discovered extensive contacts between al-Qaeda and 24 governments in #Europe, #Africa, the #MiddleEast and #Asia.

The #prison no longer controls the wing. The gang does.

#Islamist power offers inmates a compelling package: #protection from #enemies, #membership in a #brotherhood, a new #identity and a cause larger than themselves. For men who are #lonely, #angry, #frightened or facing years behind bars, that offer can be #enormously #attractive. Once inside the group, however, belonging may require #obedience—to the emir, to the gang’s rules and eventually to its #ideology.

Two #notorious #terrorists #demonstrate where that path can lead. Usman Khan spent years intimidating staff, #attempting to #convert #prisoners and acting as an Islamist leader behind bars. After his release, he #murdered Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones at Fishmongers’ Hall in 2019. Sudesh Amman also participated in efforts to convert inmates before being released and #stabbing two #people in Streatham in 2020.

Britain sent dangerous men into prison and allowed some of them to become more #influential, more #radical and more capable of recruiting others.

America’s #enemies do not necessarily have to destroy our cities to cripple the country. They may only need to make those cities stop functioning.

That uncomfortable reality is coming into focus as Iranian-linked #hackers #threaten #attacks against America’s #energy, #water and #telecommunications #infrastructure, while #lawmakers are simultaneously raising alarms about the potentially much larger threat posed by #ElectromagneticPulse #weapons.

The two threats are very different, but they expose the same #weakness: modern America is #extraordinarily dependent upon #InterconnectedSystems, and when one fails, it can begin pulling others down with it.
