Many people believe they are saved because they grew up in church, repeated a prayer, live a respectable life, or know Christian language.

But Jesus warned that some who call Him β€œLord” will one day hear the terrifying words, β€œI never knew you.”

This message examines five types of false assurance and asks a question every professing believer must face: do you truly know Christ, or do you merely know about Him?

This is not about judging others.

It is about examining your own heart, understanding genuine salvation, and making certain your hope rests in Jesus Christ alone today, forever.

Does Jesus’ warning about spiritual defilement not apply to us Christians?

Jesus made it clear that there are things which defile a man, meaning, they make the man unclean spiritually. Do we dare say that a Christian can do such things, and not have Jesus’ words apply to them?

Matthew 15:18-20, β€œBut those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.”

Apparently, the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to warn the believers that through bitterness, they can become spiritually defiled:

Hebrews 12:15, β€œLooking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

When Jesus shed His blood for our spiritual freedom and physical healing, does this apply to believers or those who reject Christ?Β In Matthew chapter eight, Jesus was demonstrating what was prophesied by the prophet Isaiah when He went about casting out demons. At the same time, He was demonstrating the healing that was purchased for us through His work on the cross. Do we dare say that these things were intended to be received by those who reject Jesus?

Matthew 8:16-17, β€œWhen the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: andΒ he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:Β That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.”

If casting out demons was only valid while Jesus was here on earth, then why did Jesus appear to His disciples after He rose from the dead, and told them that His children will be casting out demons as well?Β Also, why did the early church go about casting out demons as well? The fact is that the early church went about casting out demons, long after Jesus went on to be with the Father.

Mark 16:17, β€œAnd these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils…”

Acts 8:6-7, β€œAnd the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.”

Confessions of Irresponsibility (the Part-Time Christian)

This weekend I heard a sermon that touched on a few of the biggest disasters throughout history, one of them being the sinking of the Titanic.

Of the 1,347 people who perished, something close to 90% were men who gave up their lives so women and children could live.

In another story, the sinking of a ship called β€œThe Empress of Ireland” in 1914, there were 130 Salvation Army officers on board β€” some of them old women β€” who gave up their life preservers, even to strong men, saying, β€œI can die better than you can.”

What the pastor said made me think: If you were one of the survivors and someone gave his or her life up to save yours, wouldn’t it change the way you lived from that day forward?

Most of us would agree β€”Β Yes, definitely!

And yet Jesus gave up His life for us. We have all been on that sinking ship (and maybe still are), but Jesus gave us a life preserver β€” one he paid for with his life. We have been saved, ultimately, from the greatest disaster.

Has if profoundly changed the way we live? Are we living a true Christian life, or are we only walking with God when it’s convenient?

CONFESSING HATE

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, β€œhate” is defined as intense hostility and aversion, usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury. IfΒ  Jesus boiled down the 10 commandments to two laws, which were β€œLove the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and all your mind,” and β€œLove your neighbor as yourself,” how can we find it OK to disobey?

If we ever find an excuse to justify hating on another, especially someone who is innocent of the attack, we directly refuse the teaching of Jesus Christ.

Welcome to part 4 of the Going By Faith series β€œUncovering Sin and Finding Forgiveness.” For last week’s confession on cowardice, clickΒ here.

How it works: First pray with the Bible verse and then read the questions one by one β€” answer them truthfully. This is between you and God.

Every β€œyes” answer means sin in your life, so spend time confessing it. Name it to God. Let there be no excuse for it β€” just admit it and ask forgiveness.

PRAY

Verse: John 13:35 (NLV)

β€œYour love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

CONFESS

  • Are you secretly pleased over the misfortunes of others?
  • Are you secretly annoyed over the accomplishments or advancements of another?
  • Are you guilty of any contention or strife?
  • Do you quarrel, argue, or engage in heated discussions?
  • Are you a partaker in any division or parting spirit?
  • Are there people whom you deliberately slight?

β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”
We already know that whatever is in our hearts determines what we say (Matt 12:34), so take it a step further and question the secret thoughts that no one hears. They are still things weΒ say, just not aloud.

Luke 5:45 tells us:

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

It doesn’t matter what others do or how others act, let’s leave nothing undone on our part. We’re not perfect, and we need God’s Holy Spirit to help us turn the tide of negative thoughts, feelings and words, but hating on other people is sin at work displayed for all to see. We know it’s not the right way.

Amplified Bible: Revelation 20:4 – The Millennial Reign : And then I saw thrones..

And sitting on them were those to whom judgment [that is, the authority to act as judges] was given. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had refused to worship the beast or his image, and had not accepted his mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Footnotes:

πŸ‘‰ Revelation 20:4 A description of the common state of the Church of Christ in earth in that space of a thousand years, for which the devil was in bonds: in which first the authority, life, and common honor of the godly, is declared, verse 4. Secondly, newness of life is preached unto others by the Gospel, after that space, verse 5. Finally, he concludeth with promises, verse 6.
πŸ‘‰ Revelation 20:4 For judgment was committed to them, as to members joined to the head, not [that] Christ’s office was given over [to] them.
πŸ‘‰ Revelation 20:4 This was a type of the authority of the good and faithful servants of God in the Church, taken from the manner of men.
πŸ‘‰ Revelation 20:4 Of the Martyrs, which suffered in those first times.
πŸ‘‰ Revelation 20:4 Of the Martyrs which suffered after that both the beasts were now risen up, Chapter 13, for these three things are expounded.

Vexed Series
An unclean spirit can vex anyone, including Christians. In a 33-part teaching series, John Kilpatrick identifies evil spirits in Scripture and teaches how you can be free from vexation. Just because an unclean spirit gains entrance does not mean it has a permanent home. Jesus cast out demons, and people were healed!

Confessing was not scary, not shameful – just freeing.

One of them subsequently organised a prayer session, where I shared my life story, confessing all the dirt and joys. The two prayer intercessors proceeded to ask more detailed questions about my life events, my family history and where I saw Christ in the midst of the accounts I gave.

Through their questions (prompted by God), my answers and their prayers, it became obvious that there was a long-running generational curse in my family: a spirit of accusation. I sort of always knew this but was never able to piece it together and spear it head-on, until now.

They explained that this generational spiritual stronghold was probably passed down through my grandmother, who was a practising witch back in America.

As a child, my grandmother would pass me gifts and crystals that she said would β€œprotect” me, and even though I knew Jesus was the One who would protect me and didn’t want these gifts, I felt I could not refuse her.

I could suddenly see so clearly how it was Satan’s number one strategy of attack to penetrate my life from a young age. He even used other relationships (men, friends, coaches, colleagues, etc.) to accuse and make me feel like an unlovable, hopeless failure. We prayed for my family and me, proclaiming Christ’s victory over this generational stronghold.

During the prayer, I felt the Presence of God breathing through me and lifting me up in a way I never have before – I felt so connected, light, full, free, joyful, peaceful, complete, and excited!Β

I was laughing and crying with joy again. The prophesies and words of encouragement given during our prayer time were additional strong affirmations of what God has already hinted to me. I thought I knew, but now I finally (really) know what it means to desire more of Him and less of me.

I thought I knew scripture but it now seems to pop out with a whole new level of understanding.Β

I have been asking Him to teach me more how to pray. My connection with my Saviour in prayer has deepened beyond description. I no longer am constantly battling the inner shouts of accusation and self-hatred. I know the devil will attack again, but I will continue to proclaim my victory because Christ already has the victory!

After 23 years of following Jesus, I finally experienced living freely in the power of Jesus’ death and resurrection – fully, passionately overflowing, unencumbered by strongholds deep beneath the surface.
