Bahrain cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 alongside #SaudiArabia during an earlier crisis between the regional rivals. While Riyadh restored ties in 2023, Manama is yet to do so.

Meanwhile, the #UnitedKingdom Maritime ​Trade Operations reported early Sunday that a vessel was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It said the crew’s status, damage #assessment and #environmental impact were unknown.

Around a fifth of #global oil supplies transited the strait before the United States and #Israel attacked #Iran in February, launching the war.

#Global oil prices have surged over the past week after the United States and Iran both fired on tankers in the strait, and Iran’s #Houthi allies in #Yemen advanced near another crucial #MiddleEast conduit for oil, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait on the opposite side of the Arabian #Peninsula.

According to the Iranian official, #Iran still wants an #agreement that would allow it to collect fees from ships that use the strait, which #Oman rejects.

Iran has been negotiating for months with Oman, which controls the opposite bank of the strait, over a deal that would govern transport through it. Oman has long said its negotiations are supported by other Arab countries in the #Gulf.

Tehran announced on Friday that it was planning to attend a meeting with Gulf countries in Oman on Monday. Oman has not officially announced the meeting and other regional states have so far remained silent. #Bahrain said on Saturday it would not attend meetings with #Iran, pointing to #attacks on #infrastructure across the Gulf while adding that #security and #stability in the region “cannot be preserved through a policy of appeasement.” It also called for Hormuz to be open without “ #discrimination, fees or permits.”

Iranian official says Tehran still seeking #agreement that will let it charge ships a toll, which Muscat rejects; #Bahrain rules out #attending Monday meeting between Gulf states and Iran

An understanding nearing #finalization between Iran and Oman does not provide for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz but establishes the basis on which it could reopen, an Iranian source told the semi-official Tasnim news agency on Saturday.

The source said the #arrangement would be a step toward Iran exercising sovereignty over the strait and that its reopening depended entirely on the #United States meeting Tehran’s conditions.

The comments came ahead of a meeting between Iran and Gulf states planned for Monday, which a senior Iranian official said would be a chance to discuss issues including the Strait of Hormuz, but is not expected to yield a signed agreement over the blockaded waterway.

The strike came as #Washington and #Tehran had both suspended a June interim #agreement.

#Evidence that Tehran was drawing on Chinese #technology during the conflict had emerged months before the deadly strike. The Financial Times reported in April that Iran was using a Chinese-built and -launched spy #satellite purchased by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Aerospace Force from Earth Eye Co. in late 2024.

Muwaffaq Salti Air Base was targeted again by #Iran on Thursday, in a strike that reportedly damaged several US aircraft, though Trump denied that any planes sustained damage.

#Beijing has repeatedly refused to acknowledge that any Chinese firms have supplied Iran with #satellite imagery to target US forces, according to the sources cited by the Journal.

The outlet added that the US findings could deepen #China -US tensions ahead of the planned September 24 White House summit meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese #President Xi Jinping.

But #Beijing rejected the #allegation and demanded that Washington provide #evidence, the Journal cited its sources as saying.

A spokesperson for #China embassy in #Washington told the newspaper that cooperation between Beijing and #Tehran was consistent with #InternationalLaw and #accused unnamed critics of “maliciously linking and smearing other countries.”

US officials say imagery of Jordan air base was provided ahead of and after #attack that #killed 3 troops; Beijing rejects #allegation and demands #Washington provide #evidence

Chinese entities supplied Iran with high-quality #satellite imagery of a US Air Force base in Jordan both before and after Tehran launched a deadly #BallisticMissile attack on the facility on July 17, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday, citing US officials familiar with the matter.

The officials, who declined to identify the Chinese entities, said Washington had linked the satellite imagery to the strike, providing what they described as the clearest evidence yet that Chinese support for Tehran during the war had contributed to the #deaths of US troops. They stopped short, however, of accusing Beijing of directly participating in the attack, according to the Journal.

US Vice President JD Vance reportedly sought direct insight from American generals on the war against Iran, seeking to bypass the #Pentagon amid his skepticism of the extended #military conflict.

A New York Times report says the VP was seeking direct intel from military commander on “objectives, tactics, casualty estimates, what the Iranians would do in the Strait of Hormuz.”

According to the report — citing “more than half a dozen” current and former officials, the commanders warned Vance about severely depleted #military stockpiles, as well as the Iranian regime’s willingness to dig in for a major and drawn-out fight.

The newspaper says that the “sobering private #assessments” received by Vance were often quite different from the often #boastful public #rhetoric coming from President Donald Trump.
