Georgia legislature passes bill banishing free speech zones

  • Georgia’s legislature on Monday passed a bill that would abolish free speech zones at the state’s public colleges, banning a system that critics say chills free expression.
  • Free speech zones are places on campus designated for demonstrations and other forms of expression. At public colleges across the U.S., they are sometimes the sole areas of campus where officials permit protests. Georgia’s legislation specifies most outdoor spots on public campuses would be considered open areas for expression.
  • Georgia’s public institutions could still create “narrowly tailored” rules governing when and how students can protest. Such rules, known as time, place and manner restrictions, are intended to avoid campus disruptions.

Nankhumwa must Stop sidelining Mutharika – Namalomba

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Spokesperson and Mangochi South West  MP Shadreck Namalomba has disclosed that he wants Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa to start consulting the party leader president Peter Mutharika before making decisions in Parliament.

Namalomba said he has obtained a court order against Nankhumwa because what the Leader of Opposition is doing is not right and the party leadership is being sidelined a thing which is not on.

The injunction stops Nankhumwa’s recent appointment of a shadow cabinet and DPP spokespersons in the House without the party’s approval. The order is also staying a decision by the Leader of Opposition to change the sitting plan that moved Namalomba to seat number 100 from seat number 25.

Chakwera to visit America

President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to visit the United States from March 16 to 19, as chairperson of the United Nations (UN) group of Least Development Countries (LDCs).

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Chakwera will participate in the first part of the UN conference on LDCs at the organization’s headquarters in New York.

The UN describes LDCs as low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development.

“They are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets,” the UN says.
