Hungary drained its waters for generations. Now drought is exposing the cost. AP News

A fisherman disembarked from his boat in a small harbor on Lake Velence in Hungary last week, trudging up the dock plank that had become extremely steep as the water receded to record lows.

Árpád Selmeci said navigating even a small fishing boat on Hungary’s third-largest lake is becoming increasingly difficult as the water level has ebbed to around 20 centimeters (8 inches), well below the 150 centimeters (5 feet) optimal for August. Swimming beaches across the lake, once popular with tourists, have been closed.

Lake Velence’s decline is part of a broader water crisis confronting Hungary as increasingly prolonged droughts and climate change-driven heat waves have pummeled Europe.

“I’ve lived on Lake Velence since I was a child, and I’ve never seen the water so low,” said Selmeci, 58. “It’s terrible. My heart aches every single moment.”

This summer, wildfires scorched the continent from the United Kingdom to Greece, while in Hungary, drought has damaged crop yields, led to drinking water shortages and threatened to shut down the country’s only nuclear power plant.

Yet the lack of rainfall linked to human-driven climate change is only part of Hungary’s water problem. Experts say the country’s long-standing practice of channeling water away from its landscape and draining natural wetlands has left it especially vulnerable as droughts become more frequent and severe.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A man in Norway discovered a Maine Department of Transportation hard hat more than 3,300 miles (5,310 kilometers) away from its home.

Sigbjørn Eide said he was collecting trash earlier this month along Norway’s coast when he came across the white hard hat buried in seaweed. Eide spotted an American flag and a MaineDOT logo on the hard hat, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

Around 85% of the excess deaths in Wallonia were among those aged 65 or over, with low-income seniors who lived alone particularly at risk, according to official statistics.

“It’s a country that is considered cold, culturally. People think more about heating their house than cooling their house,” Gilles Vanvolsem, managing director of the Belgian Green Building Council, told the Times.

The number of households with AC, which is lower than most other developed economies, drops to between 4-6% in France, Germany, and the UK, which have all seen blistering heatwaves this summer.

“The mentality on air conditioning has to change,” Belgian doctor Toon Ceyssens told the Times, adding that many of his patients were reluctant to install AC over fears it would make them sick, spread germs, and harm the environment.

Belgian officials continue to hesitate over introducing AC, warning it could overwhelm the power grid and heat up cities by pumping out hot air into the streets.

Authorities are instead looking at introducing more so-called cooling spaces and instituting policies to encourage housing renovation.

Energy cost inflation a major challenge for more than half of Germany’s economy

What was once the economic powerhouse of Europe is rapidly unraveling as business leaders, associations and consumers are finally coming to the realization that Germany is in serious trouble.

In the coming months, energy supplies will dwindle to the point that rationing will more than likely ensue. The resulting energy shortages will further skew prices above and beyond current inflationary levels, eventually leading to a collapse.

The Federation of German Industries (BDI) conducted an analysis recently which found that energy cost inflation is a major challenge for 58 percent of German companies, while 34 percent say what happens next will determine their survival.

If prices continue to soar, that 34 percent will be out of business in no time. The domino effect of that loss will probably also yank an even higher percentage down with it.

Some companies are in talks about moving production overseas in order to survive. If that happens on a large enough scale, then Germany will ultimately lose a big chunk of its manufacturing base.

One in 10 German companies has already reduced or even halted all production due to the energy crisis. One in four German companies is now in the process of relocating company shares or parts of production and jobs abroad to countries where energy is more affordable.

Estonia shares a 180-mile border with Russia and has strongly supported Ukraine before the war began. Estonia is a small nation with a population of around 31 million and a GDP of $36.29 billion USD. Their inflation rate is among the highest in Europe after spiking to 22% in June.

EU foreign ministers to discuss Ukraine aid, measures against Moscow on Sunday

Feb 26 (Reuters) – European Union foreign ministers will come together for a virtual meeting on Sunday to adopt further measures in support of Ukraine and against “aggression by Russia”, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said late on Saturday.

“I will propose a package of emergency assistance for the Ukrainian armed forces, to support them in their heroic fight,” he said on Twitter, adding that the meeting would start on Sunday at 1800 CET (1700 GMT).

Yet, this situation pales in comparison to the price hikes that European consumers are facing. As a case in point, the OFGEM, UK’s energy regulator, lifted the energy price cap to £3,549 as of 1 October (from £1,971), adding a warning that prices could get “significantly worse” through 2023.

Indeed, yet another sharp move in European energy prices took benchmark rates to new record-highs. The 1 month forward Dutch TTF contract jumped to €311/MWh, while the 1 month French electricity contract reached a mindboggling €750/MWh. The fact that nobody wants to be short power right now certainly doesn’t help either as it reduces liquidity in the market – which may have been exacerbated by ICE’s decision to increase margin requirements on European gas futures.

BIOWEAPONS COVER STORY: U.S. government admits to “consolidating” weapons of mass destruction for “threat reduction” purposes

(Natural News) The Biden regime’s Department of Defense (DoD) has released a document claiming that the Russian Federation is “spreading disinformation” about the United States government’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) operations.

According to the regime, the U.S. has been working on “threat reduction efforts with Ukraine, Russia and other former Soviet Union countries.” Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the document explains, the U.S., along with its allies, partners and “international organizations,” has supposedly been trying to eliminate the threat of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons attacks.
