12 Signs of Unhealed Trauma that Adults and Children Can Feel Inwardly
These signs are pretty hidden. These are secret experiences a person goes through. An anxious or nervous person will not speak about it unless they have to.

- Racing heart, palpitations, breathing problems
- Anxiety, including chronic low level anxiety
- Being on ‘red alert’, or hyper-vigilant
- Panic attacks
- Nervousness, fidgeting, holding oneself or one’s own hands
- Can’t sit still
- Overwhelming fears or seemingly irrational fears such as something falling from above
- Flashbacks and intrusive memories or images
- Unexpected or explosive emotional responses but normally calm, kind persona
- Extreme sensitivity to light, sound, smell, suggestion, language, images or touch
- Insomnia, nightmares, night terrors, vivid dreams that seem real, dreaming while awake
- Physical, mental or emotional exhaustion (seems inescapable)
The next 4 signs are a little bit more visible and may indicate repeat or sustained trauma.
- Mental ‘blankness’ or spaced-out feelings, whole body tingling, constant self observation, derealization
- Unexplained bouts of grief, sadness or rage – hiding away or acting out
- Don’t want to be touched, pulls back at offers of affection, clings to parent’s leg (child), extremely shy
- Longer than normal thumb sucking – into later childhood and sometimes adulthood
In cases of early childhood trauma and traumatic stress, the self-regulation capacity of our autonomic nervous system and physiology is disturbed, preventing us from regaining a ‘relaxed normal’ state. Otherwise benign events or triggers may exhaust our nervous system whose distorted ‘normal’ settings are hypersensitive, unresponsive or erratic. Over time, after months or even several decades, this can result in unwanted life circumstances such as the following:
Trauma Healing Through Jesus Christ
Many Christians have telling symptoms of unhealed trauma and don’t even realize it. Let’s look at some common signs of unhealed trauma so we can identify what might be hiding under the radar in you, your spouse, your coworkers, or your children. Once you discover signs of hidden trauma, the next step is to begin trauma healing through Jesus Christ. Thankfully, God has already provided ALL trauma healing through Jesus Christ.
So let’s take the first step. Please take a look at the symptoms of trauma listed below. Do you have any of these symptoms?
BREAKING GENERATIONAL CURSES Duane Vander Klok
“She has her mother’s eyes.” “He looks just like his father.”
We have all seen how the physical characteristics of parents pass on to their children. You may have a big nose from your dad or your mother’s smile. You might be short or tall, light-skinned or dark based on the physical traits of your ancestors, but one thing is sure: much of who you are physically is influenced by heredity.
Heredity also has an influence on your talents, abilities, traits, and even how you think and behave. We have all heard the phrase, “Like father, like son.” But did you know that it is just as true in the spiritual realm as it is in the natural?
Generational influences have the ability to bring blessings – or curses – to your life. An understanding of this reality brings the power to change not only your life, but the lives of your family members as well.
Three Stages of Bondage
There are three stages of bondage in the believer that needs to be addressed. I highly recommend attacking stage one first, then stage two, and then if there are still bondages left, proceed to stage three. Even if you need deliverance from level three bondages, attacking the first two stages will prepare you for a successful and lasting deliverance from stage three bondages. If you try to attack stage three without getting stage one and two dealt with, you could be in for an unsuccessful and disappointing deliverance session that takes you nowhere. The enemy can often use stage one and two bondages to fuel his ability to hang a stage three bondage over you. Stage one gets your facts and beliefs strait, stage two cuts off any legal rights the enemy has on you, and stage three is the work of casting him out.
Before I begin I want to make a point very clear, this is only a brief look into the basics of how these three bondages work and how to be freed from them. I highly recommend further reading in some of the books I have recommended at the end of each section. Especially before attempting the stage three of deliverance! Deliverances can be scary, and dangerous if you go into one without knowing what you are doing, or having God’s hand guiding you, and therefore I highly recommend reading at least a couple good solid books on deliverance before attempting to cast out demons, unless you know the Holy Spirit is leading you through the whole process.
Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.”
Romans 13:4
For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.
Genesis 3:17
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.”
No matter your background, generational curses can be broken.
No matter your background, generational curses can be broken. But it’s not easy. If you have a generational curse in your life and want to break it, here are some steps that may help:
- Start with repentance – First and foremost, you must repent of the sin that created the curse in the first place. When we sin against others or ourselves, God promises us separation from Him (Isaiah 59:2). When we don’t repent at all or persist in our sins after having been convicted by His Spirit (Zechariah 7:11), He will leave us alone (Hosea 4:16).
- Get rid of idols – You might be surprised to learn that idols are not just statues made out of wood or stone; they’re also people who have an idolatrous hold on our hearts—people who take priority over God Himself! The Bible says that when someone becomes an idol in your life, they become like a god before whom you bow down and worship (Exodus 20:3–5). If this is happening in your life right now, seek immediate help from one or more Christian friends who love you enough to tell you what needs saying. Pray together regularly so that they can lead you into freedom as they help free themselves from their own idols as well!
