Confronting Reluctance

We each have various sources of hardship and frustration in our lives. It might be a boss or a co-worker. It might be a tone of voice or an annoying habit from your spouse or child or parent or sibling or friend. It might be a deep unmet desire, like the desire to be married.

Whatever the frustration, how often do you find yourself attempting to obey God while muttering and murmuring about the hardship? How often is there a hitch in your obedience, or an edge to your obedience, or self-pity in your obedience? It’s like we say to ourselves, I will do the right thing, but there will be enough reluctance and grumbling accompanying my obedience that everyone will know what it’s costing me.

Now some of us grumble directly about God. “Why is he doing this to me?” Or we grumble about our circumstances, conveniently “forgetting” the truth that nothing comes into our lives except by his hand. Others of us grumble about people. We disguise our complaints against God by focusing them on the people around us. And we have all sorts of rationalizations for this. “I’m not grumbling about God; I’m just being honest about the failures and sins of other people.”

This is precisely where we must press. It is important to distinguish faithful groaning from ungodly grumbling, lamenting from sulking. Groaning and lamenting can be good and right. They can be faithful responses to real pain. So what distinguishes them from grumbling and sinful complaining? Often, it’s honesty. Do we take the pain to God directly, or does it come out sideways, as complaints about God’s wisdom disguised as observations about other people?

The key question here is: where does the pain go? Do you bring it to God, as part of offering yourself totally to him? Or does it simmer on a low-boil in your soul, and come out in a frustrated service and sulky obedience?

Grumbling and Disputing

A major temptation for the obedient is to murmur and grumble in our obedience. That’s why Paul says to do everything without grumbling or disputing, without murmuring or complaining, without sulking or arguing, without whining or backtalk. A temptation for an obedient people is to offer frustrated, grumbling obedience.

In other words, Paul is clear that how we obey matters. The spirit beneath our actions matters. God’s standard and expectation for us isn’t merely to obey. It’s to obey all the way, right away, cheerfully. All the way, right away, with a happy heart.

This means that partial obedience is disobedience. Delayed obedience is disobedience. And grumbling obedience, irritated obedience, frustrated obedience is disobedience. And it’s crucial for us to press this truth into the corners of our lives.

Grumbling Obedience Resisting a Common Temptation

If you were giving an exhortation to an obedient people, what temptations would you urge them to guard against? Most of us would likely highlight the danger of pride and self-righteousness. And we’d be right to do so.

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul is addressing an obedient people. Unlike the Galatians or Corinthians, Paul does not write to them in order to rebuke and correct substantial failures and errors. Outside exhorting a few quarreling women, there isn’t a hint of “You foolish Galatians!” (Galatians 3:1) or “Are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?” (1 Corinthians 3:3). Instead, to the Philippians, Paul says, “As you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence” (Philippians 2:12). The Philippians are an obedient people.

So how does Paul exhort them? What does he see as a key danger for this obedient people?

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. (Philippians 2:14–16)

IS THE RED HORSE GETTING READY TO RIDE IN UKRAINE?

It has become exceedingly clear that there will be war in Ukraine.  In fact, some would argue that the war has already begun.  On Wednesday evening, widespread artillery bombardment of Donetsk and Luhansk started, and it hasn’t stopped since.  It is being called “the most intense artillery bombardment for years”, and it should be making front-page headlines all over the globe.  According to one diplomatic source, “everyone and everything” is being targeted…

A diplomatic source with years of experience of the conflict described Friday’s shelling in east Ukraine as the most intense since major combat there ended with a 2015 ceasefire. “They are shooting – everyone and everything,” said the source.

It is also being reported that mobile phone service is down throughout Donetsk and Luhansk.

Needless to say, a communications disruption often occurs just before an invasion.

Of course all of this is happening as accusations of “false flag attacks” continue to fly back and forth.

When the vehicle of a top separatist leader exploded in Donetsk, western media sources immediately labeled it as a “false flag operation” by the Russians, while the Russians immediately blamed pro-Ukrainian forces…

6. Surround Yourself with Positive People

And lastly, surround yourself with positive people who see the best in you and who bring out the best in you. Honestly, this was a very crucial step in my own healing process. It wasn’t until I emptied my life of pretty much everyone and everything that I was not only able to root out all the bad stuff, but really grow in all the good stuff as well.

Yes, this is very difficult to do, especially if you have friends and family who are toxic. But coming from someone who gave up every single friendship I had prior to this point of healing – it was worth it. Yes, sometimes I miss some of my old friends – they were wonderful people who did nothing wrong – but it was what I had to do to find healing, and I’m so glad I did.

If you’ve been living with pain, shame and regret over choices you’ve made in your past, let me tell you – it does NOT have to be this way. I know because I’ve been there, but I’m not there anymore.

5. Walk in Truth

Of course, feeling forgiven and making positive changes going forward isn’t always easy. That’s why you must commit to walking in truth.

What sins do you struggle to avoid? What Scriptural truths do you struggle to believe? Find relevant Scripture, write it down, memorize it, and refer to it constantly. Meditate on it day and night until it becomes a part of you and you start living according to it.

Are you struggling with guilt and shame over your past? Memorize Romans 8:1, which says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Repeat it to yourself every time those feelings try to creep back in again. Say it out loud if you need to. Write it on your hand if you need to. Spray paint it on your walls if you need to. Whatever it takes for you to be able to proclaim it victoriously.

4. Forgive Yourself

If God, who is perfect, pure and holy can forgive you – so can you. You are not allowed to hold yourself to a higher standard than God does (as though you were a more righteous judge), and you don’t want to say that Jesus’s blood is insufficient for your sins (it’s not). When God declares you forgiven, you are forgiven. Period. The end.

3. Seek Freedom from Bondage

Of course, not all sins are easy to break, especially in cases of addiction. This is because, when we allow sin to enter our lives, we give Satan a foothold or a “grasping on point,” from which he can influence and control our lives, and he isn’t going to let it go of it easily. Therefore, if you have sins that are keeping you in spiritual bondage, stronger measures may be needed.

Two of the absolute best resources I know of on spiritual strongholds are the books “The Steps to Freedom in Christ” and “The Bondage Breaker,” both by Neil T. Anderson. I went through both books and “The Steps to Freedom in Christ” study guide in high school, and it absolutely began a period of great healing and transformation in my life. I know it can for you too.

If you have sins you struggle to break free from, I would strongly encourage you to check out one or both books. But don’t stop there. Speak to your pastor, a strong Christian mentor or a trusted Godly friend. Speak to a counselor or doctor, if you need to. Do whatever it takes to find true freedom once and for all. I can promise you, it is hard but it is worth it.

1. Confess Your Sins

If you are a Christian with sin in your life that you have yet to ask forgiveness for, you should feel some degree of guilt or shame. It is this guilt and shame that compels us to turn to God and seek forgiveness.

So start with confession, or admitting your wrongdoings. Be honest with yourself and own up to whatever it is you have done or failed to do. Confess your sins to God first (He already knows about them anyways), and then to whomever your sins have hurt, as well as a fellow sister-in-Christ who can help hold you accountable.

Sin and shame thrive in secrecy. Don’t give them the chance. Get everything out in the open where you can remove it properly.
