Processing Pain So It Stops Driving You

Pain we don’t process tends to leak sideways as acting out, irritability, or numbing. Infidelity is one of those leaks because it briefly anesthetizes shame, grief, and fear. Processing doesn’t mean wallowing; it means metabolizing so the feeling stops running the show and you regain choice.

Consider therapy that directly targets old wounds and attachment injuries. EMDR, trauma‑informed CBT, and parts‑based work can help your nervous system file memories properly so today’s stress doesn’t trigger yesterday’s panic. Couples work, including Emotionally Focused Therapy, can build safer connection while you own the harm. Journaling, body‑based practices, and trusted community add momentum between sessions. The goal is integration: that younger part feels held, so it no longer seeks relief in secret relationships.
