Thousands of years before anyone used the modern phrase “blood moon,” the prophet Joel wrote, “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come” (Joel 2:31). The Apostle Peter repeated those words in Acts 2, connecting the imagery of the heavens with the prophetic Day of the Lord.
Then there is the unmistakable language of Revelation 6:12: “And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood.”
Jesus Himself warned that the period surrounding His return would be accompanied by extraordinary celestial events, declaring in Luke 21:25 that there would be “signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars.”
So when millions of Americans walk outside Thursday night and see a reddish moon hanging over the nation, the question is inevitable: Are we witnessing a sign of the times–or just another eclipse?
The answer requires biblical discernment rather than either sensationalism or dismissal.
