Who is the Antichrist? A Biblical Checklist

What does the Bible reveal about the identity of the Antichrist?

The word antichrist appears only in the writings of John (1 Jn 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 Jn 7). John says in his day there were already many antichrists (1 Jn 2:18) and that what they had in common was their denial that Jesus is the Christ and the Incarnate Son of God (1 Jn 2:22; 4:3; 2 Jn 7).

The Greek word “antichrist” means “against Christ” or “instead of Christ.” The Latin equivalent is “vice-Christ” or “vicegerent of Christ,” which means one who is in the place of Christ or represents Him. In fact, the Antichrist is one who is both against Christ and takes the place of Christ. Satan is the ultimate Antichrist who opposes Christ and usurps the place of Christ through his agents.

Nevertheless, the Bible reveals a particular entity to whom the title “the Antichrist” especially applies. Identifying features of Antichrist are provided in several passages. Revelation 13:1-18 describes a leopard beast that opposes Christ and His people. Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:2-12 describes an apostasy within the church that develops into the “man of sin” who sits in the temple of God showing himself that he is God, and is finally destroyed by Christ at His coming.

The little horn of Daniel 7 and 8 is the same blaspheming power that is slain by Christ when He returns. The features of the little horn are identical with those of the Antichrist described by John in Revelation and by Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians. What does Daniel say about this infamous entity?

In a vision, recorded in Daniel 7, Daniel sees a small kingdom, symbolized by a little horn which arises from among the ten horns of the fourth terrible beast. The little horn power represents the Antichrist and is described in Daniel’s dream with great detail so that we can clearly identify who this end-time enemy will be.

Daniel 7 gives us very precise identifying features of the horn, and every single one must apply in order to make an accurate identification possible.

The 13 features are as follows:
