Monsanto on Trial Again Over Allegations Roundup Weedkiller Caused Cancer Allan Shelton, a 34-year-old resident of Kansas City, Missouri, who has non-Hodgkin lymphoma, alleges Monsanto knew of scientific research showing its Roundup weedkiller could cause cancer but suppressed the information and failed to warn consumers.

Nearly four years after the first-ever trial over allegations that exposure to Roundup herbicide causes cancer a new trial was underway on Tuesday, pitting a 34-year-old man suffering from non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) against Monsanto owner Bayer AG.

Allan Shelton, a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri., was diagnosed with NHL in May 2016, a little more than a year after international cancer scientists affiliated with the World Health Organization classified the active ingredient in Roundup, a chemical called glyphosate, as a probable human carcinogen.

Shelton’s lawsuit against Monsanto mirrors tens of thousands of other U.S. lawsuits filed since the 2015 classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

His lawyers allege Monsanto knew of scientific research showing its product could cause cancer but failed to warn consumers, instead working to suppress and manipulate information about Roundup dangers.

Monsanto knew there would be a “day of reckoning,” but was undeterred, Shelton lawyer Roe Frazer told the jury in opening statements. “Their sole motive was money, and lots of it.”

Shelton, a slender African-American man, watched as Frazer told jurors that Shelton began spraying Roundup at the age of 10 and sprayed regularly at home and at work throughout his youth.

There Was No Hearing Scheduled in Case of Escaped Inmate It’s not clear whether prison official participated in escape willingly, or was coerced

(NEWSER) – The US Marshals Service is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that helps them capture Alabama fugitive Casey White. White, who disappeared along with prison official Vicky White (not related) as she escorted him to the courthouse Friday, is charged with two counts of capital murder in a fatal 2015 stabbing, in which he was allegedly paid to murder the victim, per Law and Crime. He had also been incarcerated for a 2015 crime spree including home invasion, animal cruelty, and carjacking, NPR reports. Vicky White told jail officials to prepare Casey White for transport to a mental health evaluation, but the sheriff says no such evaluation had been scheduled, AL.com reports. He also says Vicky White transported Casey White alone, a violation of protocol, but that due to her status as a 25-year law enforcement veteran she was probably not questioned.

Vicky White had turned in her retirement papers the day before the two went missing, the sheriff says, noting that the investigation will look at interactions between the two to “see if something else was going on.” “All indications are that Director [Vicky] White was involved and participated in the escape. We are trying to determine was that done willfully, or was she somehow coerced or threatened into participating?” the sheriff says, per WBRC. Either way, he adds, Vicky White is presumed to be in danger. “Casey White is believed to be a serious threat to the corrections officer and the public,” a US Marshal says in a statement. “Do not attempt to apprehend this fugitive.” Information can be submitted to the USMS Communications Center at 1-800-336-0102, or submitted anonymously via the US Marshals Tip App. (Read more Alabama stories.)

(NEWSER) – An American man has been sentenced to death in China for fatally stabbing a 21-year-old woman who tried to break off their relationship. Shadeed Abdulmateen was sentenced Thursday after a trial in the Intermediate People’s Court of Ningbo, a city in China’s eastern coastal province of Zhejiang, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. The AP reports Abdulmateen met the victim, identified only by the surname Chen, in 2019 and entered into a romantic relationship with her. When she attempted to break off relations, Abdulmateen arranged to meet her at a bus stop in Ningbo, then stabbed her to death on the night of June 14, 2021, with a folding knife he had brought with the intention of killing her, Xinhua said.

The trial was attended by more than 20 people, including government officials and members of the public. Xinhua said the court ruled that the facts surrounding Chen’s murder were “especially heinous and resulted in serious consequences.” It said Abdulmateen had been provided with a defense, translation services, and consular visits, but gave no details on his hometown or how he came to reside in China. A US embassy spokesperson said the embassy is aware of the sentence and monitoring the situation, but for privacy reasons, could not offer further comment. Few details about Abdulmateen were available, but CNN reports that he taught at the Ningbo University of Technology.

78 from Alabama arrested as Panama City Beach grapples with disorder

An image from a press conference livestream shows some of the 75 weapons confiscated during one spring break weekend in Panama City Beach. Local officials said the city was targeted by a group of lawbreakers. Many of those arrested were from Alabama.Panama City Beach Police Department

Florida law enforcement officials say they arrested 78 people from Alabama in Panama City Beach, Fla., over the weekend and confiscated 75 guns as spring break revelry devolved into chaos.

“What we saw this past weekend is absolutely unacceptable,” Panama City Beach Police Chief J.R. Talamantez said in a multi-agency press conference held late Monday morning. “The behavior of these pathetic cowards that came to our beach and committed these crimes, their actions will not be tolerated.”

The weekend apparently started on a rowdy note before coming to a head on Sunday afternoon, when a 21-year-old from Alabama was shot in the foot.
In a report aired before the shooting, Panama City-based ABC affiliate WMBB-TV reported that some beach roads had been shut down and some businesses had closed voluntarily, including a Walmart, due to gridlock and rowdy behavior. Interviewed at the time, Talamantez told the station that people were “acting a fool” but that there had been no violence and that he would not characterize any of the activity as a riot.
